The Longford U-17 footballers crashed to a heavy defeat against Laois in the opening round of the Leinster Minor Championship at O’Moore Park on Wednesday evening.

Laois . . . 2-12   Longford . . . 1-2

Tony Devlin’s side were left to rue some very poor finishing as they registered 13 wides in total, hit the woodwork twice and went scoreless for 45 minutes between their first and second scores of the game.

The visitors did get the first score as Cormac Flynn pointed a free in the third minute but they failed to register another score during the remainder of the first half and trailed by 0-7 to 0-1 at the break.

Longford’s next score did not materialise until the 48th minute when Patrick Mollahan scored a cracking goal and another consolation score followed from Flynn.

Laois won by the wide margin of 13 points in the end and Longford will be hoping for better fortune when they take on Kildare (who beat Offaly 3-15 to 2-11) in the Round 2 fixture at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Wednesday evening next, throw-in 7pm.
