Alan Ned Gray
On a good day it is almost 20,000 miles from Arva to Dunedin in New Zealand's south Island. It's a journey Alan Ned Gray first took back in 2008.
Since then the former Arva GAA footballer completed a Bachelor’s degree with Honours in Music at Otago University.
That academic grounding has stood to him as he has become a mainstay of the Dunedin music scene. Trading under the name of Flying Man the singer songwriter has just released a new single ‘Under The Stars’.
Alan is the son of Eamon and Philomena Gray of the The Breffni Arms. A previous single, 'Since You’ve Been Gone’ clocked up over 40,000 plays on Spotify. ‘Under The Stars’ is already in the NZ top 10 and climbing.
“I'm proud to share my sophomore single ‘Under The Stars’. It's an imagined celebrity life dreamt up by two young lovers which will have you humming along hours after you’ve stopped listening,” Alan said of the release.
The Flying Man single features Lara Rose from highly acclaimed Dunedin folk duo ‘Tall Folk’: “The single paints a picture of wealth and status dreamt up by a young couple while they promise to maintain their love for each other by continuing their current relationship traditions. Through their star studded lifestyles they’ll still frequent local karaoke bars and sleep ‘Under The Stars’.”
Flying Man’s song-writings sit in the electro-acoustic realm. It features programmed beats, live looping and layered harmonies. He creates haunting melodies and infectious rhythms coupled with lyrics to tell stories from snapshots in time.
Alan has been writing music since he was 14 and was a member of Irish band Lucas who had a top 40 single in the Irish charts as well as successful tours of the US East Coast where they also recorded their debut album with famed multi Grammy nominated Rob Fraboni.
Flying Man released his debut solo single ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’ to rave reviews and has been slowly building up a following while gigging around New Zealand.
Flying Man will be playing festivals in NZ over the summer, so a visit home to bring his music to his native land may not be out of the question.
