A 'farewell' celebration mass took place for the Sisters of Mercy, Ballymahon, in Mercy Secondary School last Friday
There were mixed emotions in Mercy Ballymahon last Friday as the school said 'thank you and farewell' to the Sisters of Mercy as they will be leaving Ballymahon in June.
Staff and students celebrated the Sisters of Mercy and their tremendous contribution to education and community life in Ballymahon since first arriving in the town in 1872.
Mercy Ballymahon is very proud of its heritage and are grateful for all that the Mercy Sisters have done since setting up the school in 1924.
To begin the day’s proceedings, a tree was planted to represent the history of education at Mercy Ballymahon which has grown as a result of the influence of the Mercy Sisters.
The tree was planted by the remaining three sisters in Ballymahon - Sr Vincent Keena, Sr Maura Faye and Sr. Maura Conlon.
This was followed by Mass, celebrated by Fr Liam Murray, in the Sports Hall, attended by special guests the Mercy Sisters including retired principal Sr Assumpta Falkner, Sr Úna Purcell, Sr Dympna Cassells and Sr Elizabeth Manning. Also in attendance were retired principals Mr Joe Mackey, Mr Jimmy Lennon, Chairperson of the BoM Mrs Mary Kenny, retired staff members and members of the Parents Council.
After the mass, the invited guests received a standing ovation from the student body and staff as they left the hall to the beautiful singing of the school choir of ‘Walk in the Light’.
The celebrations continued in the school canteen where lunch was served and many happy memories shared.
