The Longford Ladies suffered a comprehensive 17-point defeat against Westmeath in the All-Ireland Intermediate Football Championship Group 4 clash at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday.
Westmeath . . . 3-14 Longford . . . 0-6
Two goals from Aoife Connolly and another from Anna Jones guided the much stronger Westmeath side to a most emphatic win and this result means that a relegation battle almost certainly awaits Longford.
Alan Mullen’s charges would need a huge victory (by 11 points) away to last years’ All-Ireland Junior champions Antrim in Cargin on Sunday next to progress to the quarter-finals so the midlanders are facing a real uphill battle.
Longford only used one substitute against Westmeath and it was surprising that other players were not given some valuable playing minutes, but hopefully, more of the bench players will be used against Antrim who are the hot favourites to win the remaining group game.
The Ulster county have already accounted for Westmeath in this group with an impressive four-point away victory. They are also the Division 4 League champions and Ulster Intermediate champions, so it will be a major achievement for Longford to get a result next weekend.
The Saffrons are a very fast team who have high quality throughout their team. Orlaith Prenter, who scored 1-7 in the victory over Westmeath, is their star player. Wing-forward Grainne McLaughlin plays a great supporting role to Prenter, while Orla Corr and Ana Mulholland are other key players for the talented Antrim team.
