Country music star Johnny Brady is set to open this year's Longford Summer Festival

The Antrim singer is making a welcome return to the Longford Summer Festival and is now firmly established as one of the big name acts on the country music scene.

He has worked and toured with Mike Denver, Derek Ryan, Declan Nerney, Nathan Carter and Jimmy Buckley but probably his earliest motivation and inspiration came from the legendary Big Tom.

Says Johnny, “I grew up with Big Tom, my grandfather was his uncle. I listened to a lot of my early gigs in the Old Log Cabin. I collected glasses there when I was eight or nine years old. I did a gig with him in Monaghan about six months before he died. He was a great man and he was always himself. He was a real legend.”

Looking forward to returning to Longford this year, Johnny says he revels in the street festival scene and commended the organisers for reviving the festival.

The live music on Thursday night will start on Main Street at 7pm. With no access to LEADER funding this year and whilst trying to preserve the ‘free music’ ethos of the event, the organisers are encouraging the public attending on Saturday night to make a voluntary €5 donation on admission. The charge is completely optional.
