Generally regarded as strong contenders to capture the Connolly Cup this year, Killoe were in control against the title holders Colmcille in the Senior Football Championship Group 2 Round 1 clash at wet and windy Allen Park on Friday night.
Killoe Emmet Óg . . . 2-8 Colmcille . . . 0-6
Boosted by a goal from centre-half-back Ronan Keogh, Emmet Og established a comfortable 1-3 to 0-1 midway through the first half but Colmcille came storming back to close the gap to the minimum of the margins thanks to three cracking scores from Barry McKeon along with another fine strike from Jack Macken.
Killoe ended up leading by 1-4 to 0-5 at the break but were fortunate to be still in front after Ruairi Harkin blasted the ball over the bar when a goal was there for the taking with five minutes gone on the changeover.
That proved to be Colmcille’s solitary score in the second half but the reigning champions suffered a significant setback when they were reduced to 14 players in the 44th minute after Cathal McCabe received a black card.
Killoe added another 1-4 to their tally in the second half with the influential Daniel Mimnagh firing over three points while the second goal came from a penalty converted by Mark Hughes in the 56th minute following a foul on promising youngster Colm Coyle.
