Clonguish got their Senior Championship campaign off to a great start with an emphatic win over Longford Slashers at Emmet Park on Saturday evening.
Clonguish . . . 1-14 Longford Slashers . . . 0-11
Clonguish put in a strong second half display and Slashers had no answer to the winner’s pace and accuracy. Slashers had led by two points at half-time, 0-7 to 0-5.
However, Clonguish considerably upped the tempo on the changeover. High work rate, good team work and confident shooting were the order of the day in the second half for Liam Belton’s men.
Clonguish attacker Matthew Carey has been a sensation in his first year in the senior ranks and he tormented the opposition right throughout the match.
Eight points (five frees) and a marvellous long ball that set up Chris Gordon for the crucial Clonguish goal added up to an excellent performance from Carey.
