South Longford twinning group prepares to welcome French visitors

The Ballymahon Twinning Group is eagerly counting down the days to welcome their 15 French guests on Saturday evening, August 5 next.
This marks the first visit of the French delegation from Landévant in Brittany to the town since before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, making it an exceptionally special occasion for both communities.


The Landévant delegation is brimming with anticipation as they prepare to embark on this memorable journey to Ballymahon. Thrilled to immerse themselves in the vibrant community and rich culture of the picturesque South Longford town, the French visitors are eager to form lasting connections and create cherished memories during their week-long stay.

Embracing the ordinary daily life of their host families in Ballymahon is at the top of the French delegation's agenda, seeking authentic experiences and forging meaningful bonds with their local hosts.
The Ballymahon Twinning Group has put together an exciting and diverse programme of events for the French group. The itinerary showcases the finest heritage and cultural aspects of Ballymahon, promising an enriching and memorable experience for all participants.


The carefully curated programme includes a range of activities that will immerse the French delegation in the essence of Ballymahon's natural beauty and fascinating history.


Some of the itinerary is as follows:
Forest and Nature Walk: A scenic walk along the ancient woods and River Inny at Newcastle will introduce the visitors to the breathtaking landscapes and tranquillity of the area.
Knights and Conquests Heritage Centre: The group will have the unique opportunity to visit the internationally renowned Knights and Conquests Heritage Centre in Granard, where they can delve into the rich history of the region.


Workshop on Waterboarding: At Branigan on the Royal Canal, the delegation will partake in a distinctive workshop on waterboarding, offering an insightful perspective on Canal practices.
Formal Civic Reception and Traditional Music Recital: Ballymahon Municipal District of Longford County Council will extend a warm civic reception at the Ballymahon Community Library. The event will be graced with a captivating recital of Irish traditional music performed by local musicians under the direction of Geraldine McGlynn.


Exploration mining in County Leitrim: The group will be travelling to The Arigna area of County Leitrim for an immersive experience at The Arigna Mining Experience.
Fleadh Cheoil Experience: The group will introduce The Fleadh to a lively Brittany dance and singing performance at the Fleadh Cheoil in Mullingar on the Market Square at 12 noon on Wednesday, August 9. Additionally, Geraldine McGlynn will conduct an Irish tin whistle workshop at the Fleadh, ensuring that each participant leaves with at least one memorable tune.
On Friday, August 11, the French visitors will enjoy a relaxed day in Ballymahon. The morning will begin with a warm reception and a brief tour of Bridgeways Family Resource Centre, providing an insight into the town's local services and initiatives. Later in the day, they will meander through the charming shops and cafes of Ballymahon, eagerly looking forward to exchanging greetings with as many locals as possible.


The delegation have expressed their eagerness to visit St Mel’s Cathedral and The Albert Reynolds Peace Park in Longford town and they hope to explore the beauty of Corlea Bog.


And finally Skellys Bar is set to host a captivating Community Night also on Friday, August 11, bringing together the finest Traditional Irish and Brittany music and singing. This vibrant event promises an unforgettable experience for all attendees, with everyone warmly invited to join in the celebration of these rich musical traditions.
