Longford events for National Heritage Week

Next week is National Heritage Week 2023 and all across Longford volunteers are putting together free events to highlight the importance of heritage to our communities.

National Heritage Week aims to encourage members of the public all over Ireland to celebrate their ‘living heritage’ throughout the week which runs from August 12 to 20 2023.

From Sean Nós stories to tin whistles, to Gaelic football and hurling, Irish heritage envelopes the world daily and National Heritage Week is an opportunity to celebrate this unique culture.

Every community, village, town and city has its heritage and the aim of the week is to encourage everyone to share and participate in activities that promote our heritage and to perhaps bring back some of the traditions no longer as popular or prominent in society.

Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre have gone all out with their offering. The tourism and cultural hub will host eight individual events.
The events are; a Storyteller's Walk on 12 August; Bog Bites: Birds of the Bog also on 12 August; 'What, Where, When & Why?: Understanding Bog Butter in Ireland.' on 13 August; Fairy Rock Art on 14 August; Bog Bites: Our Fabulous Fauna!; Print Making Fun on 15 August; Bog Bites: Fantastic Flora! on 15 August; and Bog Head Sculpting on 15 August. The events are coordinated by the Office of Public Works at Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre, Keenagh, Longford.

Other Heritage events on the week will include a Tour of Tashinny Church, by Neil Moxham at the Holy Trinity Church of Ireland, Tashinny, Colehill, County Longford on 12 August.

Dúchas Beo is a celebration of our living heritage at the Knights and Conquests Heritage Centre Rathcronan, Dublin Street, Granard, Longford on 20 August.

The Tour of Edgeworthstown and The Maria Edgeworth Centre at St Mary's Church, Edgeworthstown, Longford is on 20 August.
A little further afield 'Threading the Táin' The Westmeath Panel will be on display at Westmeath Heritage Office, The Market House, Mullingar on 12, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 of August.
