Granard will be home to a new 40 strong car park by the end of the year, it has been announced
Granard's parking woes finally look set to ease with the opening of a new 40 strong car park at the rear of the north Longford town's garda station.
Council senior executives had been hoping to open the new facility towards the latter end of last year.
Legal issues, however, held those plans up, much to the frustration of local politicians and business owners locally.
On foot of a question tabled by Fianna Fáil Cllr PJ Reilly, councillors were told at a recent Granard Municipal District meeting that the new car park should be open by the onset of this year's festive season.
“This car park was purchased two years ago from the OPW for a car park for Granard town and it was ready to be completed for last Christmas and because of legal problems it couldn’t be done,” said Cllr Reilly.
The long serving local politician expressed his delight, nonetheless, that council chiefs were now in a position to proceed with the project.
“This will help to relieve the parking on main street in Granard because it will take 40 cars,” he said.
“It will be lined out too which will help the parking situation in Granard and hopefully it will be finished in time for the Christmas shopping.”
