North Longford mourns death of accomplished musician and St Mel's College All-Ireland medal winner

Late Sean Gormley, Griffin Park, Trim, Meath / Aughnacliffe, Longford

The death took place, peacefully, at Our Lady's Hospital, Navan, on Wednesday, August 2 of Seán Gormley, Griffin Park, Trim, Co Meath and formerly Aughnacliffe, Co. Longford.

Seán’s father, Matt, ran a tailoring business as well as a family-operated confectionary shop just beside Kinlan’s public house.

Seán, like all of his brothers, was a fine footballer and when Colmcille won the Minor Football Championship in 1962, he played a starring role at midfield, alongside the late Johnny McCabe.

In that same year of 1962, Seán was on the panel of the St Mel’s team that won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, beating St Jarlath’s, Tuam in Ballinasloe.

Many of that great 1962 Minor team headed for England, at a time of high emigration, and played little, if any, senior football for the club. And so it was with Seán Gormley. Seán did play for a short while with St Brendan’s in Hayes, while domiciled there.

Seán was also an accomplished musician and singer who could play the accordion and guitar.

Having returned to Ireland, Seán and his wife Teresa settled in Trim, Co Meath.

He was also interested in political affairs and stood as an independent candidate for the Meath constituency in the 1982 (February) and 1987 general elections.

Much loved husband of Teresa and loving father of Orla, Phil, Damien, Gerry, Blaithín and Rachel.  Devoted Grandad of Kate, Tadhg, Síofra, Uísneach, Cuannfionn, Oísin, Aniaigh, Rían, Jack, Ollie and Robyn. Deeply regretted by his loving family, brothers Fintan and Leo, sister Emer, sons-in-law Sean, Jamie and Hugh, daughters-in-law Kate and Monica, nephews, nieces, extended family and friends.

Seán reposed at Heffernans Funeral Home, High Street, Trim, C15 HDT1 on Thursday, August 4 from 5pm to 7pm. Funeral Mass took place on Friday, August 5 at 11am in St. Patrick’s Church, Trim followed by burial afterwards in St Loman’s Cemetery.
