'Fantastic' Longford turnout for Trek with Theresa

The changeable weather of the weekend did little to dampen the enthusiasm of over 100 walkers who marched across Ardagh Mountain in aid of a good cause.

Last August Theresa McDermott Quinn, her family and friends embarked on the first Trek with Theresa, last Saturday they repeated the journey

“We had a fantastic turnout. It started off a bit choppy with the weather in the morning, but it turned into an unbelievable community event. There were so many other events on the day, but it really exceeded our wildest expectations,” Theresa told the Leader.

Last August Theresa's first trek across Ardagh mountain raised €15,500 for cancer charity LARCC. This year the money raised is earmarked for St Brigid's Gaels LGFA: “They have been very supportive and provided all the refreshments last year. They appointed me as their first president of the club at this year's AGM. So it’s nice to be able to give something back to my own community.”

Theresa was not sure how many would turn out for this year's walk: “It far exceeded our expectations. The ladies football team here is the backbone of everything in the community. It's my way of giving something back to them as they have been so good to me. We have fabulous facilities at the Ardagh Moydow GGG club, so it is good to support them.

The walk organiser was grateful to everyone who made the day so special: “I really want to thank everybody who helped me make it a resounding success for the second time. For everyone who donated, supplied refreshments, the stewards on the day, the Gardai, and the 100s of people who turned up. Also everyone who wished us well, but couldn't be there.”

The final tally is yet to be determined, but Theresa says there was great support: “I haven't got a final figure yet, because there are still sponsor cards out there. We thought we might raise €2,000, but I think we may have raised a lot more than that.”

The prospect of bringing people together again next year is not something Theresa is dismissing: “God willing we will do it again next year for another worthy cause. I am sure St Brigid's Gaels ladies will again provide all the refreshments and the man and woman power needed!”

The Trek with Theresa took place on Saturday, at 12:00noon starting and finishing at Ardagh GAA pitch.
