A long time member and former officer of the County Longford Association New York, Sean Sorohan, will be feted as the Guest of Honour at the annual Rockland GAA dance which will take place on Saturday, September 30 at the Rockland Pavilion, 160 Old Orangeburg Road, Orangeburg, NY 10962.
Sean has been a member of Rockland GAA for over 25 years and he was part of the Rockland Junior team that won the club's first major championship in 1998.
Sean was born and raised in Newtownforbes, to proud parents, John and Rose Sorohan.
Sean comes from a large family and his siblings are Cathal, Teresa, Eileen, Laura and Gary.
He played football with his native club Clonguish at all levels from schoolboy to senior and won several medals. He also played with the county team from U14 up to U18.
Leinster Colleges Medal Winner
In 1982, Sean won a Leinster Colleges medal with St Mel’s College.
In 1984, at the age of 18, he emigrated to New York. He worked at various jobs as a doorman, porter, bartender, and then pursued construction and carpentry for a number of years.
He played football for the Longford Football Club here in New York and won a variety of medals.
He was an officer in both the Longford Football Club and the County Longford Association for several years.
Sean also has a big love for boxing and he participated in the Golden Gloves in 1988. Although he didn’t win, he made it through to the quarter finals and really enjoyed that experience.
He also boxed in the famous ‘Rumble in Rockland’ fundraiser event some years later for the Rockland GAA in 2011.
Wedding Bells
Sean married Mary Lyons from Darien, Connecticut on September 30, 1989, and lived in Astoria, NY.
Her parents are Jimmy Lyons, originally from Williamstown, Galway and her late mother Kathleen (nee Keegan) is from Barry, Longford.
Sean and Mary moved to Pearl River in 1993 and made their home there. They went on to have two wonderful children – Bridget and Sean who are now 27 and 25 years old.
In 1999 Sean joined the Fire Department of New York and is currently a Firefighter in Engine 35 in East Harlem, NY. He played football with the FDNY Gaelic Football Club. He is also a member of the AOH, Division 3.
After moving to Pearl River Sean joined the Rockland GAA and became an active member. He played football with them and won a junior medal.
He has been the Field Custodian since their new field was developed and completed and he has been dance chairman for over 10 years.
Sean coached his children from U8 up to U18 and is very happy they are still playing football and love it as much as he does. Sean went with both his children to Ireland for the U14 Féile na nÓg.
Sean is very proud of his association with Rockland GAA and all the accomplishments they have made over the years on becoming a Gaelic club that any town or city in America would be pleased to be part of.
Sean is the kind of person who prefers to work quietly behind the scenes and is very humbled to receive this award.
