Longford Sinn Féin unveil 2024 local election candidates

Sinn Féin local election candidates

Four candidates, Barry Campion (Granard LEA), Lorcan Keown (Longford LEA) and James Donnelly and Maureen Piggott (both Ballymahon LEA) will run for election for Sinn Féin in next year's local election

Sinn Féin will be standing its largest ever team of candidates for the local government elections in Longford in 2024.

Speaking after candidates were selected by the party membership, Longford / Westmeath Sinn Féin TD Sorca Clarke announced that her party will field candidates in the Granard, Longford and Ballymahon Local Electoral Areas. Currently there are no Sinn Féin representatives sitting on the local authority.

“In this local council election Sinn Féin is fielding our largest ever number of candidates for election to Longford County Council.

“Sinn Féin activists in Longford have selected Barry Campion as their candidate to stand in Granard LEA, Lorccán Keown as their candidate in the Longford LEA and James Donnelly & Maureen Pigott as their candidates to stand in the Ballymahon LEA for next year’s local elections.”

Deputy Clarke continued, “For the first time we will contest additional candidates in every single Local Electoral Area. This decision reflects the expansion and strength of Sinn Féin throughout Longford and the desire that people have to see real change.

“I am delighted that local ratepayers will have the opportunity to vote for Sinn Féin council candidates in each part of this constituency. A strong team of Sinn Féin councillors will ensure that our council delivers on the issues that matter locally.”
According to Sinn Féin’s spokesperson on Education ‘change starts in our local communities’.

Deputy Clarke remarked, “Our objectives will be to deliver on housing, community facilities and amenities and investing in local infrastructure. Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have been in power for far too long. The longer they have been in power the worse things have got. The local elections are an opportunity to start delivering change.

“Sinn Féin is standing a confident and experienced team of candidates combining age and different experiences and I look forward to working with my Sinn Féin colleagues on councils and in the Dáil to tackle the high cost of living, the housing crisis and to improve our health system.”

Deputy Clarke revealed that ‘other candidates will be added in these areas as we progress towards 2024’.

She said, “I know that if they are elected they will make a significant difference to Longford County Council and the constituents they serve. I look forward to campaigning with them in the months ahead.

“Right across Longford and across Ireland, Sinn Féin will continue to bring about real change and work for a new and United Ireland – to build a better, stronger and fairer country.”

Speaking following the convention, Sinn Féin MEP for the Midlands Northwest Chris MacManus said:
“Longford Sinn Féin have selected a strong team with Barry, Lorccán, James and Maureen. They have all been incredibly effective representatives on the ground and this is reflective in the endorsement they’ve received from fellow Sinn Féin activists.”

MEP MacManus concluded, “I’m looking forward to campaigning alongside them next year as they contest the local elections and I myself contest the European elections in June.

“Team Sinn Féin are here to represent real change and deliver that change when elected.”
