The momentum behind the drive for five gathered pace as Longford Slashers cracked the challenge of Carrickedmond in the Ladies Football Senior Championship semi-final at a drenched Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday.
Longford Slashers . . . 2-8 Carrickedmond . . . 1-2
The four-in-a-row champions Slashers remained slick up front and stubborn in defence to score a convincing win.
Carrickedmond were defensively minded with the experienced Michelle Mulvey playing a sweeper role. They probably did enough defensively against their opponents but they were not as clinical as the potent Slashers attackers.
Despite usually claiming victory through fast flowing football, the weather resulted in a different type of game and Longford Slashers set their foundation for the victory in defence.
Emily Reilly was excellent at full-back and consistently turned over the Carrick attack while the Kenny sisters Laura and Grace along with Eimear O’Brien also performed admirably.
Clare Farrell was superb at half-forward in a fine overall Slashers team display with an improving Clonguish side standing in the way in the county final on Saturday week.
