County Longford Arts Service, as part of Longford County Council, and in association with Backstage Theatre has developed a new arts programme to provide transition year students with an opportunity to experience working with a professional artist.

The opportunity can help students experience the potential for further study in art and design at third level including in areas like sculpture, physical theatre and visual art, all while based here in Longford Town.

This project is funded by Longford County Council and has been developed by the Council’s Arts Service.

The participating artists include Catherine Young, artist in residence at Backstage Theatre specialising in Physical Theatre and Dance Theatre. Students could also be treated to the immersive experience with Anna Wiercioch in the Visual Arts while sculpture enthusiasts will be working with Farhad O’Neill.

Artistic Director of Backstage Theatre Mona Considine said, "We here at Backstage are excited by the introduction of this new programme and are delighted to be supporting it by engaging our Artist in Residence Catherine Young to work with the Transition Year Students."

“Transition year is a great time for students to try new experiences and learn something different,” said Acting Arts Officer Shane Crossan. “This is a new programme which will provide opportunities for students who are curious to know more about an artists’ creative process and career.”

Applications can be made online via the Arts section of Longfordlibrary.ie. Eligibility criteria and terms and conditions apply. The deadline for receipt of applications is 5pm on Thursday, October 19.
