Maths Week adds up to fun and learning for over 3,382 pupils in Longford

Get ready to immerse yourself in the fun and fascinating world of maths as Maths Week kicked off in Longford on Saturday, October 14 and continues until Sunday, October 22.

This annual celebration of maths promises an exciting line-up of events and activities designed to captivate the minds of learners young and old.

Maths Week is the national STEM promotion initiative supported by the Department of Education and Science Foundation Ireland. This island-wide initiative boasts a diverse range of activities, engaging over 500,000 participants across various platforms, including online, schools, and venues.

In Longford alone there are more than 3,382 pupils signed up and ready to immerse themselves in a week of mathematical exploration.

Killoe had to call on all their vast experience to withstand a determined Clonguish comeback on the way to winning the Senior Football Championship title for the 14th time with Mark Hughes firing over the winning point from a free in stoppage time.

The event aims to foster a love for maths and demonstrate its real-world applications while breaking down common misconceptions about the subject. It also highlights its significance in everyday life and various careers. From understanding patterns in nature to solving complex engineering challenges, maths plays a vital role in our world.

During Maths Week in Longford, students, educators, and maths enthusiasts of all ages will have the chance to engage in interactive workshops, puzzles, games, and competitions, all designed to make maths enjoyable, accessible and encourage participants to uncover the hidden gems of maths, explore its diverse branches, and unleash their creativity through mathematical problem-solving.

Kenagh came from six points down at one stage in the first half of the final against Sean Connolly's to eventually win the Intermediate Football Championship title for the first time in 40 years. 

Eoin Gill, Maths Week Ireland Co-Ordinator, expressed his excitement, stating, "Maths Week is a fantastic opportunity for students, educators, and the entire community to come together and appreciate the beauty of maths. We aim to dispel any myths about maths being boring or inaccessible by offering a range of engaging activities that demonstrate its relevance and practicality."
