After crossing the first hurdle with a comprehensive win over Crettyard (Laois) in the opening round of the Leinster Club Junior Championship the previous week, St Brigid’s Gaels found the going too tough against the Carlow Intermediate champions.
St Brigid’s Clonmore (Carlow) . . . 1-11 St Brigid’s Gaels Ardagh . . . 0-8
With home advantage, the more experienced St Brigid’s Clonmore side were in control in the first half of the quarter-final clash on Saturday last, holding a commanding position at the break after building up a 1-8 to 0-2 lead.
Rachel Keenan and Joanne Whyte got the scores for Ardagh and the crucial only game of the game in Hacketstown materialised approaching half-time. A speculative long range effort from the Clonmore centre-half-back Megan Kane dipped under the bar despite a brave saving attempt by the Ardagh keeper Lisa Keegan.
Six of the eight Clonmore points in the first half (frees and play) were registered by impressive centre-half-forward Sara Doyle and St Brigid’s Gaels were fighting an uphill battle in the second half in difficult pitch conditions.
The young Ardagh side deserve a lot of credit for their determined bid to close the gap on the changeover as Clonmore were restricted to just three more points.
St Brigid’s Gaels clocked up a total of six points in the second half, all of which were scored by Anna Hayden (5 frees), but Clonmore consolidated their tight grip on the game to emerge victorious.
Despite the disappointment of defeat, the Longford Intermediate champions are a talented outfit steadily growing in stature and will be playing in the senior grade at local level next year.
