Planning permission has been granted for a non mainstream educational facility near Kenagh
A non-mainstream educational facility has been granted approval by Longford County Council planners to develop a school near Kenagh.
CLG Midhe Democratic School made the application for a change of use of an existing residential dwelling for community education use.
The building, formerly Barry Stores, will consist of three classrooms and ancillary facilities.
The local authority approved the plans subject to 11 conditions.
The change of use will entail essential repairs, internal alterations, replacement of the existing septic tank and associated works. The property address is Barry, Keenagh, Longford.
The Midhe Democratic School is a “self-directed” learning environment for students aged 5 to 18 years old.
The local authority received the application last September. The school plans to open in January 2024 with 20 students.
The local authority received four submissions on the planned school. Objections included issues with parking, the building's historic significance, the existence of asbestos roofing on site, the effect on local property prices, the presence of bats in the building and noise concerns.
Conditions set out by the planners include: adherence to the submitted plans, demarcation of 'set down' areas, provision of refuse storage area, water and wastewater considerations, provision of an ecological survey, an asbestos survey, and an appropriate parking plan.
