Early on the morning of Saturday, September 16 a brave group of volunteers set off from Lisryan on a mission to complete a sponsored climb in aid of the Longford Branch of the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland and the Lisryan Tidy Village and Development Committee. Croagh Patrick was the destination.

The group were blessed with blue skies and sunshine after what had been yet another miserable week of rain.
Some had never climbed the mountain, or any other mountain for that matter before. Some were returning for the second or third time, but it didn’t matter as all 29 of them did it together and supported each other all the way.

There were great bonds and friendships forged that day, it proved to be a great day out. The amount of money raised was phenomenal.

The support shown to the group by everyone was exceptional and so very much appreciated. Because of this support, on Friday, November 3, a night of celebration and presentation was held in the Crossroads Inn, Lisryan.
The committee were honoured to be in position to hand over €4,000 of the €7,000 raised to the Longford Branch of the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland.
Breda Dunne from the Longford Branch accepted the cheque and as she admitted herself, she was in awe of the amount raised for them and the spirit shown by the group of volunteers.

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland is the leading dementia-specific service provider in Ireland. The ASI works across the country in the heart of local communities, providing dementia-specific services and supports and advocating for the rights and needs of all people living with dementia and their carers.

A national non-profit organisation, The Alzheimer Society of Ireland advocates, empowers, and champions the rights of people living with dementia and their communities to quality support and services.

Watching those you love suffer from this disease is absolutely heart-breaking, and what this society provides for people is a life changer, their help and support is incredible.

Unfortunately a few of the group who embarked on the climb have been affected by this crippling disease and understand only too well what it is like to live through this with loved ones.

The work this society does is just outstanding and anything the group can do to support and give back to them is worthwhile.
