After completing a clean sweep of the underage ‘A’ football titles at U-14, U-16 and U-18 level, rapidly rising Clonguish are back at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Sunday next in the bid to capture yet another championship crown in a very successful season.
Providing the opposition in the U-21 ‘A’ football final are Killoe and with the same clubs after contesting the 2023 SFC decider in October a new kind of rivalry is developing into the future.
Quite a few of the players who featured in the Connolly Cup showdown will be back in action in the intriguing U-21 clash but the injuries are mounting for Emmet Og with Cormac Harte and Colm Coyle forced to retire in the semi-final against the Ballymahon/Kenagh amalgamation on Sunday last.
Darren Moffett, centre-half-back on the triumphant Killoe senior side, is currently on the casualty list and the suggestion is that Clonguish will be very hard beaten in their quest to win the U-21 ‘A’ title for the second year in succession.
When the sides met in the group stage it took a last minute penalty goal from Jack Duggan to swing the issue in favour of Clonguish with the narrow margin of two points (1-11 to 2-6) separating the sides in the finish so it could be another close encounter on Sunday (throw-in 2pm).
Granard and Carrickedmond clash in the U-21 ‘B’ football championship final at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Saturday (throw-in 2pm) and last year’s beaten ‘A’ finalists St Mary’s are fancied to come out on top this time.
Also part of a busy weekend in the end of season action is the meeting of Longford Slashers and Wolfe Tones Mostrim in the U-20 hurling championship final at Moran Park in Carrickedmond on Sunday (1pm).
