Melview National School Deputy Principal, Carmel Browne, takes up the post of President of the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation at Easter.
In advance of that Carmel will go on secondment to the teacher's union from January in preparation for the role.
Carmel will be the first Longford teacher to take the helm of the oldest and largest teachers' trade union in Ireland.
The INTO President elect faces many challenges, but none larger than repairing the rift following the breakdown of pay talks: “The ICTU public service committee will be meeting in the next few days to put a plan together to ballot for industrial action in January,” she told the Leader.
