Longford roads are in treacherous conditions
The Status Yellow snow and ice warning has had a significant impact on Longford. In the early hours of this morning the warning came into operation for Longford, Cavan, Monaghan, Dublin, Kildare, Sligo, Roscommon, Westmeath and Leitrim.
It will run to midday with falls of sleet and snow forecast, leading to possible icy stretches on untreated surfaces and poor visibility.
A spokesperson for Met Éireann has said it was not clear until this morning that snowfall was going to be as heavy and widespread as it is.
The snow has disrupted roads, schools and power supplies. Across the county, particulary in the north homes are without electricity.
ESB say that 100 Customers are affected Legga, while another 67 households in Aughamore and 49 in Aughnacliff are without power.
There are 57 customers affected in Mullinalaghta, while Cullyfad has 29 without power, 20 in Ballinamuck, and 25 in Longford town.
In a statement the ESB said: “We apologise for the loss of supply. We are currently working to repair a fault affecting your premises and will restore power as quickly as possible.”
Longford County Council say that due to the early morning snow, there are a number of roads partially blocked in County Longford.
Snow ploughs are being deployed to these locations on a priority basis, with national and regional routes being addressed first.
Please be aware: The N55 and the R194 appear to be the worst impacted by the snow. Currently, the N4 appears to be passable with care. Longford County Council salting trucks were out last night and again early this morning. Reports have also been received of debris from trees on some roads, which may impact on nearby powerlines. Crews are responding so please proceed with caution, and do not attempt to touch any fallen wires.
Longford County Council is urging people not to make any unnecessary journeys today, until road conditions have improved and for those who must travel, please proceed with caution and allow extra time for your journey.
