Longford County Council engineers have given commitments to examine a number of accident mitigation measures for the Ballymahon Municipal District area following a recent meeting of the authority.
Councillor Paul Ross called on the local authority to apply for a low-cost safety scheme at the townland of Aghintemple/Killenastra, Ardagh on the R393 to install a crash barrier on the dangerous bend where there have been many crashes including a crash in which a vehicle hit a house and burned it down.
In his reply to the motion, Senior Executive Engineer with the council's Road Design department, Con Diffley, said: “Longford County Council will consider the appropriate measures for this location and will consider this location for future low cost safety scheme applications.”
Cllr Ross also raised the prospect of reinstating the timber post and rail fence at the Royal Canal, Terlicken, Ballymahon which was blown down in recent storms.
Area Engineer Brian McNeela said the local authority have moved on the issue, saying: “I have contacted Waterways Ireland and they have given a commitment to reinstate the timber post and rail fence.”
In a separate motion, Cllr Ross asked if a pedestrian crossing could be installed at the junction of The Park House Hotel and Kilbride Park.
Senior Executive Engineer Con Diffley gave a commitment for an assessment of the proposal saying: “The roads section will assess this location for traffic calming measures and measures to improve pedestrian safety. Once this assessment is carried out this location will be considered for low cost safety funding in 2025.”
