Longford mourns passing of proud family man and GAA enthusiast Joe Kilbride

The late Joseph Kilbride, Smear, Aughnacliffe, Longford

Joseph Kilbride of Smear passed to his eternal reward in the presence of his extended family and professional care of nurse Margaret, following a prolonged illness, on Friday, April 12.

Beloved husband of Gráinne and dear father to Kevin and Colm and grandad to little Ruadhan TJ who had brought so much pride and joy to Joe just four months ago. Joe is also survived by his dear sister Maggie and brothers Liam and Sean who will dearly miss him.

Joe was the first born of the late Mick and Rita Kilbride of Coolarty and he is also predeceased by his sister Kathleen Daly who departed this life in February 2012.

The Kilbride family have very precious memories of Joe and they hope that these will help them come to terms with their loss and when they get together they will laugh at all the good times they shared.

For Joe family always came first and he had a great secret pride in the achievements of his boys Kevin and Colm and both himself and Grainne were so happy when Kevin and Fiona were married on New Years day 2022 and the arrival of Ruadhan TJ on December 15 last really gave him a much needed boost.

Also around that time Colm introduced the lovely Nady and Joe was so delighted to see both his sons in lovely happy relationships.

Joe had a great love for the GAA and while he never played football he was a very committed clubman, first to Ballymore and when he married Grainne and moved to Colmcille he became a very loyal supporter of the local club but I always felt that his heart was in Ballymore and I think this came to fruition in the last year when his son Colm was part of the management team of Ballymore who won the Junior championship and on that day I know that he shed a few tears of joy for his home club.
It's no secret that Joe may have been a little hard on referees at times and was never bashful in letting them know his opinion but yet he never fell out with anyone and was able to have a laugh with them when the final whistle sounded.
During Joe's long illness he always appreciated the doctors and medical people who looked after him and remained very positive right to the very end and was a great inspiration to all.
As a family we sincerely thank all who carried us through the past few difficult weeks, the kindness of the great people of Colmcille will never be forgotten and we hope you will help us in the weeks and months ahead.
Joe's funeral Mass was celebrated in Colmcille Church on Monday, April 15 and his remains were removed to the Lakeland Crematorium in Cavan for cremation.
His months mind Mass will be celebrated in St Colmcille's Church Aughnacliffe on Friday evening May 10 at 7.30pm. May he rest in peace with our Mam, Dad and sister Kathleen.
