Longford County Council’s first TidyTowns engagement event was held in Edgeworthstown Library on Saturday, April 27. Organised by the Council’s Environment team, fourteen local TidyTowns groups were in attendance.

Guest speaker Ann O’Leary shared over 43 years of experience as a TidyTowns adjudicator. Ann shared her insights and experience on many topics relevant to the TidyTowns process to help groups with their competition preparations.
Longford County Council also shared information with the groups on initiatives being developed which could benefit the groups into the future. Topics of biodiversity, sustainability, climate action and environmental awareness initiatives were also discussed.

County Longford currently has over 30 active TidyTowns groups. Each group plays a crucial role in keeping local towns and villages well-maintained for both local people and visitors. They promote community engagement to help to improve the local environment and build pride in our shared spaces. TidyTowns groups are also embracing biodiversity and sustainability.
Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Colm Murray said, “I thank all the groups who attended this first-ever TidyTowns engagement event. Everyone who participates in a TidyTowns group is an unsung hero, who cares deeply for their local area, leading by example and boosting our local pride. I encourage anyone thinking about joining their local TidyTowns to do so.”

Longford County Council Chief Executive Paddy Mahon added, “It was great to see so many TidyTowns groups in attendance. The Council and our Environment team are striving to make sure TidyTowns groups feel supported in the important voluntary work that they do. We hope that all groups feel motivated coming away from this event.”
Longford County Council would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all local TidyTowns volunteers who attended this first engagement event.
