A former Longford RFC player makes his professional rugby debut tomorrow in the Leinster v Connacht URC clash.
Leitrim will be represented on Friday at the RDS Arena when Bornacoola's Shane Mallon dons the green to play on the wing for Connacht. Shane is named to start on the western provinces team who play Leinster in their final URC game before the knock out stage.
Pete Wilkins' side need a bonus-point win to stand any chance of breaking into the play-offs, while they will also require some favourable results on Saturday.
Shane, along with Dave Heffernan and Santiago Cordero will make milestone appearances in Friday’s BKT United Rugby Championship interpro with Leinster in Dublin.
Academy back three player Shane has been handed a debut for his home province, with the Leitrim man named on the left wing, while Santiago Cordero makes his first Connacht start at full-back.
Head Coach Pete Wilkins said of the appointments: “For Dave Heffernan to be making his 200 Connacht appearance, and Shane Mallon his first, typifies the Connacht ethos of developing local players who understand how special it is to play for this province.
“Dave and Shane’s families, friends and local communities can be very proud of their respective milestones”
Shane who plays for Longford RFC and UCD RFC takes the number 14 shirt for the game kicking off at 7.35pm. Rugby fans can get to cheer on Shane and his teammates as the game is televised live on TG4.
