Investigating gardaí are appealing for witnesses to both collisions

There is huge shock in the north Midlands community of Castlepollard following a second fatal road crash inside 24 hours.

Yesterday evening, Tuesday, July 2, at approximately 6.40pm, Gardaí were alerted to a vehicle which had collided with a roadside ditch on the R395 at Teevrevagh, Castlepollard, claiming the life of a man in his 50s.

While at approximately 5.30am this morning, Wednesday, July 3, a horror two car crash on the R394 at Gartlandstown, Castlepollard has resulted in the death of a man in his 80s and three more people have hospitalised. 

Gardaí and emergency services are still at the scene of this morning's fatal two-vehicle road traffic collision on the R394.

The male passenger of the first car (aged in his 80’s) was pronounced deceased at the scene. The female driver (60’s) was conveyed to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore hospital for treatment for serious injuries.

The male driver of the second car (30’s) was conveyed to Midland Regional Hospital Mullingar, for treatment for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.

The male passenger (20’s) was conveyed to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore hospital for injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.

The road is currently closed for technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the R394 between Mullingar and Castlepollard, Co Westmeath, between 4.45am and 5.45am this morning, Wednesday, July 3, are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.
