Mosstown Forest is a hidden gem in Co. Longford. A new initiative spearheaded by a forestry trust organisation, could see it evolve into a significant tourist amenity in South Longford.
Irish Forestry Unit Trust Forestry Management Ltd are based in Carrick-on-Shannon. The company manages a portfolio of forests throughout the country.
They identified Kenagh as an area with increased footfall that could be developed further.
In conjunction with Longford County Council and some other stakeholders, a 1 km walk has been developed in Mosstown Forest.
The Chief Operations Officer of the Forestry Trust, Darryn McDowell, explained to the Leader the project in Mosstown Forest.
“We have worked with Longford County Council to build walkways in Mosstown. There is also a lot of history in the area that is incorporated into the walkways,” he stated.
“Local historian Paddy Egan is helping us in this regard. There are a number of historical sites in the forest. These include the limekiln, an old mill and a folly,” Darryn added.
A historical plaque has been installed on one of the benches. A significant feature of the forest is the lime tree avenue.
During the upcoming National Heritage Week (August 17 – 25) Paddy Egan will be leading people on a walk in the forest, during which he will explain the history of this wonderful setting.
