Longford County Council propose Athlone Road improvements

Longford County Council have taken the first step to improve the vista of one of the approach roads to the county town.

The local authority has signalled its intention to undertake junction realignment and street improvement works on the N63 Athlone Road at Cartrongeeragh, Farannyhoogan, Ballyminion and Townparks, Longford.

There are several aspects to the proposed Part 8 Planning development.

The plans are for the construction of a footpath and cycle track along the N63 between the railway bridge at Townparks Industrial Estate and the Royal Canal at Cartrongeeragh.

This footpath and cycle track will predominantly be segregated with shared sections between the Royal Canal and Clontirm Lane and from the Flancare Roundabout to the West Link Business Park.

The carriageway of the N63 will be realigned and narrowed to facilitate the footpaths and cycle tracks.

Also in the plans is the provision of a raised high visibility pedestrian crossings on all arms of the roundabout on the N63, the Flancare Roundabout.

The scheme includes a uncontrolled pedestrian and cyclist crossing of the N63, for the Royal Canal Greenway, at Churchland Bridge, a raised crossings for pedestrians and cyclists at all accesses and junctions along the N63.

The works include mMinor realignment of all junctions and accesses to facilitate the raised pedestrian and cyclist crossings, including junction tightening measures and the provision of a raised high visibility pedestrian crossing of the N63 in the vicinity of the Sealtec and Michael Shaw Car Sales businesses.

Provision of a raised high visibility pedestrian crossing on the L-30132 local road at Mastertech
Business Park is included.

A pedestrian crossing phase at the traffic signals shuttle system at the Railway overbridge and the pprovision of amended roadside boundaries where they are required to facilitate the footpath and cycle tracks are also in the plans.

The plans include the relocation of raised display area and all aAssociated works such as road resurfacing, public lighting, storm water drainage, road lining.

The plans and particulars of the proposed development are available for inspection or purchase at the Planning Department offices of Longford County Council, Áras an Chontae, Great Water Street, Longford during official public opening hours from this Friday (August 16) 2024 up to and including Friday 13th September 2024.

David Tubridy, A/Director of Services, concludes the statement with: “Submissions with respect to the proposed development, dealing with the proper planning and sustainable development of the area, may be made by the following methods;

“In writing to Longford County Council, headed "N63 Farranyoogan" and addressed to Planning Section, Longford County Council, Áras an Chontae, Great Water Street, Longford to arrive not later than Friday 27th September 2024 at 4pm.”
