All children starting school in September 2024 can collect a free book bag at their local library as part of the ‘My Little Library Book Bag’ initiative.

The ‘My Little Library Book Bag’ initiative aims to support the transition to primary school. The scheme is a collaboration between libraries and the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth as part of the First 5 Strategy.

Children and their parents or guardians are invited to collect their bag at any County Longford library. These libraries are based in Ballymahon, Drumlish, Edgeworthstown, Granard, Lanesboro and Longford. Book bags are available in both Irish and English and contain a book and a cardholder.

Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Mark Casey said, “The free book bag initiative is a great way to support our young learners and start their school journey on the right foot. Reading is important for learning and can help children to understand and deal with the steps they take as they grow. By providing free book bags to all children starting school, we’re ensuring each student has the resources they need to thrive. We look forward to welcoming the children in to collect their book bags.”
