Longford schools are in with a chance of winning a major athletics prize this week, as Longford Athletics Club have announced a stellar prize for their 1K event this Friday.

The Athletics Club announced in a post online that the school with the largest number of entries, proportionate to their total enrolment, will win a signed and framed singlet of Cole Hocker, US Olympian and gold medallist.

Hocker has trained with Flynn Sports Management agency, run by Longford town native and local star Ray Flynn. Flynn saw three of his trained athletes take home medals in the 1500m race in the Paris Olympics this summer, but it was the young American star Cole Hocker who secured the gold.

This local connection has meant that Longford schools can win big with their entries this week, as multiple primary school races take place this Friday.

As part of the event, there will be Primary School’s races in the centre of Longford town:
8.10pm: 3rd & 4th Class, 680 metres
8.25pm: 2nd Class and younger, 450 metres
8.40pm: 5th & 6th Class, 1000 metres

The races will run in conjunction with the Ray Flynn Elite Mile at 8pm, as well as a 5K night run for adult entrants at 7pm.

Entry for Friday’s schools races, as well as the Elite Mile and open entry 5k Night Run, can be FOUND HERE.

Number collection for pre-registered entrants is at the Athletics Centre on Friday from 5.30pm. Registration can also be done on the evening.

The event will take place at Longford Athletics Centre, with access to the Centre by the main St. Mel’s College avenue entrance only.
