Gardaí from Longford are appealing for help from the public in identifying the people involved in an attempted murder of a 74-year-old Longford man.

On 17th July this year, a navy-blue BMW car with UK registration plates, drove into the Springlawn estate in the centre of Longford Town.

Two men jumped out of the car and one, armed with a shotgun, ran to the front window of a house where he fired two shots directly at the victim inside. Despite the severity of his injuries, he survived.

While the shooting took place, the other accomplice stood near the car, filming the incident on a mobile phone.

Both men, and the driver, then fled the scene in the car, driving along the Ballinalee Road and out the N4 towards Dublin.

A short time later, at a farmyard a few kilometres outside Longford, the car was found abandoned and on fire.

An attempted murder investigation was launched but to date, no one has been arrested in connection with the case.

Detective Sergeant Keelan Brennan told Crimecall that the Springlawn estate is a very “close knit community…It’s not only the victim, this impacts also upon the wider community and in particular the residents of Springlawn.”

Gardaí are asking people for information relating to the identity of the men caught on CCTV or for any help in tracing the location of the car in the days or weeks leading up to the shooting.

They are appealing to anyone who has information that could assist the investigation to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crimecall on 1800 40 50 60 or Longford Garda Station on (043) 3350570
