Lus na Gréine Family Resource Centre (FRC) joined the global effort to raise awareness of poverty as part of the UN's International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on October 17.

To mark the occasion, they hosted an open invitation for the community to visit their ‘Unity’ Community Garden, a project that has grown into a symbol of togetherness and sustainability for the local area.

It was a great occasion with visitors also enjoying a coffee morning and an opportunity to converse about biodiversity, food production and the global impacts of conflict and war on the lives of so many vulnerable communities.

The 'Unity' Community Garden was designed throughout 2023 by students and families from the North Longford area, a collaborative effort that has become a hub of education and connection. It’s a space that not only brings people together but also raises awareness of the importance of sustainable practices.

The Lus na Gréine garden features facilities for growing plants in their polytunnel and glasshouse, raised beds, seed harvesting spaces, and an outdoor space where visitors can sit and enjoy the peaceful environment of nature.

The project focuses on educating the community about sustainable food practices, such as rainwater harvesting, crop rotation, and biodiversity. It highlights the critical role these practices play in addressing poverty by promoting self-sufficiency and environmental care—values that resonate both locally and globally.

As work continues to enhance this space, Lus na Gréine looks forward to further establishing the garden as a key resource for the community. Lus na Gréine invites everyone to get involved, learn, and grow with them as they work together to build a brighter and more sustainable future.

By celebrating this important day, Lus na Gréine hope to shine a light on the interconnectedness of poverty, environmental sustainability, and community action, and we thank everyone who has supported this initiative. Together, we can make a difference.
