The suspension of work-to-rule action at St Christopher’s disability services has been welcomed by Longford-Westmeath TD Micheál Carrigy who has also expressed hope for a positive resolution to the long-running dispute between management and Fórsa members.

The work-to-rule, which began in mid-November, stemmed from a breach of the 2021 collective agreement on the payment of increments.

Following extensive negotiations, Fórsa and St Christopher’s management have now agreed on a set of proposals designed to harmonise pay scales and address staff concerns.

Under the new proposals, which Fórsa members will ballot on next week:

  • From January 1, 2024, all staff currently on the 2021 pay scale will move to the 2022 pay scale.
  • From July 1, 2025, all staff will progress to the October 2023 pay scale.
  • Staff not at the top of their pay scale will move up one point from January 1, 2024, with another point increase planned for 2025, contingent on achieving €150,000 in cost savings.

Deputy Carrigy praised the resolve of Fórsa members and the efforts of the new CEO and management team in reaching this stage.

“This has been a difficult and challenging time for staff, service users, and their families. I commend both sides for engaging constructively to address these issues and for the commitment shown to improving conditions for the dedicated staff at St Christopher’s,” he said.

Deputy Carrigy highlighted the critical role that St Christopher’s plays in the Longford community and acknowledged the financial challenges faced by the organisation.

“The measures outlined in this proposal represent a significant step toward resolving the dispute and creating a fairer, more sustainable working environment for staff. I hope that Fórsa members will see the merit in these proposals and that this marks the beginning of a brighter chapter for St Christopher’s,” he added.

Deputy Carrigy expressed his ongoing support for the staff, management, and service users at St Christopher’s, emphasising his commitment to ensuring that the organisation continues to provide vital services to those in need.
