RIP: Longford saddened by death of highly respected historian and author Jude Flynn

The late Jude Flynn was a founding member of County Longford Historical Society and the author of nineteen editions of ‘Fireside Tales’

Longford is mourning the death of local historian and author Jude Flynn of Aughadegnan, who passed to his eternal reward, peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Monday, February 17.

A native of Gortletteragh, Mr Flynn worked in Longford Post Office and he was a founding member of Longford Historical Society in 1967 and served as its Honorary Secretary for twenty-four years. He also served as President from 2011.

Jude was also involved with  the Longford Genealogy Centre and the Longford Tourism committee, however, he is perhaps best known as the author of nineteen editions of ‘Fireside Tales’, which are so important in recording life in Longford.

County Longford Historical Society honoured Jude for his lifetime of service in 2022, and he also donated his extraordinary collection of recordings that he had  been conducting since the 1980s to Longford County Library and Archives Services.

Predeceased by his beloved wife Mary, parents Thomas and Emily, sister Úna, brothers Liam, Matt, Bart, Gerard and Fr. Tom; the late Jude Flynn will be sadly missed and remembered with love by his family, daughter Gráinne, sons Ciaran and Joe, sister Peggy, daughters-in-law Tina and Jean, son-in-law Ryan, grandchildren Emma, Tara, Daniel, Michael, Ruby, Amber and Donal, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. May he rest in peace.

He will lie in repose at Glennon’s Funeral Home, Ballinalee Road (N39 EC81) on Wednesday,  February 19 from 6pm concluding with prayers at 8pm. Mass of the Resurrection  will take place on Thursday, February 20 in St Mel’s Cathedral, Longford at 11am, interment afterwards in Gortletteragh cemetery. House private please.
