New Special Educational Needs unit to enhance facilities at Longford secondary school

A significant milestone has been reached in the development of a new Special Educational Needs (SEN) unit at Templemichael College in Longford, as the project has been officially approved to progress to tender stage.

This SEN unit will provide state-of-the-art facilities, creating an inclusive environment for students requiring additional support.

It is part of a broader initiative by the Department of Education to improve educational resources across Ireland. 

The unit will feature dedicated classrooms, sensory areas, quiet spaces and a sensory garden, all designed for tailored learning experiences for students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and other complex needs.

LWETB Chief Executive (Acting) Brian Higgins said, “This project is a testament to our ongoing efforts to enhance educational provision in the region. We are dedicated to ensuring that every student, regardless of their needs, can succeed.”

Templemichael College Principal, Sorcha Nic Dhonnacha, welcomed the development which will enhance the facilities in Templemichael College to cater for the 2 classes of ASD students.

She stated, “Every child with ASD deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential within our education system. We welcome this news and the opportunities it gives our students.”
