Two motions calling for improved road safety measures in the same area in Longford Town
Two motions calling for improved road safety measures in the same area in Longford Town were put forward in the last Longford MD meeting.
These calls were put forward by two separate councillors and addressed various problems within the safety of Longford Town’s roads.
The first motion was put forward by Cllr Niall Gannon and called for safety measures to be implemented outside Mean Scoil Mhuire on the Convent Road.

“There are serious concerns for the safety of these students as they cross the road to access different parts of the campus. The recent tragic incident on this road, which resulted in the loss of life, highlights the urgent need for improved safety measures.”
Cllr Gannon's request asked that measures like speed bumps, pedestrian crossings or other devices made for calming traffic.
Both of these motions received resounding support from the rest of the chamber.
“I want to support that motion,” said Cllr Kevin Hussey. “I am on the board of management and it’s very important.”
Martin Monaghan also voiced his support for Cllr Gannon's motion.
“It’s a dangerous section of the road with a school on it.”
Councillor Kevin Hussey also put forward a motion regarding road safety.
“I call on Longford County Council to undertake improvement works to upgrade the lighting and pedestrian crossing poles at the crossing located in Market Square, Longford Town, in the interest of pedestrian safety and improved visibility.”
Cllr Hussey also highlighted the same areas that were a concern for Cllr Gannon.
“This is the road past the Tally Ho Pub.
“There's two lights on either side of the road.
“The big amber light on the left doesn’t work and the amber light on the right doesn’t work.
“I think if I stood there with the light on my iPhone I could see it better.
“I’m going to put it on record here today someone is going to get knocked down and seriously hurt."
