The tours on Saturday, August 23 will be preceded at 11am by the official opening of the restored wrought iron gates that have recently been hung at the entrance to the Centre.

This restoration work was carried out by members of Dromard Area Men’s Shed under the tutelage of Thomas Mulligan, a blacksmith from Mohill.

Also helping with the work was Ballinalee blacksmith PJ Mallon who carried on business at his forge in Ballinalee for many years.

Old pictures dating back to 1897 show similar gates hanging on the entrance piers. The picture also shows the entrance walls capped with stone in a traditional style.

These features have also been painstakingly restored during the recent reconstruction works on the Centre’s boundary wall.

This work was funded by CLÁR, Longford County Council and Latin School Community Centre.
