New ‘Safe & Sound’ safety training comes to Longford's Night-Time Economy

Longford County Council has launched the 'Safe & Sound' safety training initiative for businesses across the county's Night-Time Economy, including pubs, restaurants, hotels, cultural venues, taxi services and more.

The training, available free for 12 months as part of Longford's participation in the national Night- Time Economy Pilot programme, addresses vulnerability after dark through practical modules designed specifically for those working at night.

Staff will gain increased awareness of their responsibilities and duty of care, along with training on actions needed to reduce identified risks in their establishments.

Michael Nevin, Head of Enterprise with Longford County Council, said, "This training represents a significant step forward for Longford's Night-Time Economy. Our businesses have highlighted the pressing need for practical guidance on these complex issues, and the Safe & Sound training provides exactly that. We're not just talking about tick-box exercises here – this is about equipping frontline staff with real skills to protect both customers and colleagues. When people feel secure in establishments, they're more likely to return, bringing vital footfall and revenue to our local economy."

Beyond training, the initiative provides 17 policy templates tailored specifically to Irish legislation and cultural context, covering critical areas including violence prevention, sexual harassment, mental health support, dispersal management, drugs and alcohol protocols, and crime scene preservation.

Each policy includes clear operational guidance for frontline staff, managers and venue owners, all grounded in Irish law.

These aren't abstract policies -they are practical tools that acknowledge the specific challenges our venues face. The flexibility of the online format means busy managers and part-time staff can access training when it suits them. This is about building confidence throughout our sector, from the newest bar staff to the most experienced venue operators."

Recent statistics show that the evening and Night-Time Economy plays a crucial role locally, with 92% of people recognising its importance to the overall economy and 71% believing it contributes positively to cultural life.

The Safe & Sound Online Training Portal is now available to all night-time economy businesses in Longford. Training modules are accessible 24/7, allowing staff to start, pause and continue at their convenience. Downloadable resources and policy templates support the learning process, with certificates issued automatically upon completion.

The initiative has been developed by Night-Time Economy Solutions (NTES), a global leader in the sector, and funded by the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport through the Night- Time Economy pilot project.
