Longford boxer produces brilliant performance as he captures national title in style

Granard boxer Cian Leddy is crowned Irish Under 15 Cadet Champion at the National Stadium

Talented Granard boxer Cian Leddy produced an absolutely brilliant performance at the National Stadium, home of Irish boxing, on Friday night, August 29, as he was crowned Irish U15 Cadet Champion.

In the semi-final, two weeks earlier, Cian faced Charles O’Brien, the reigning Boy 3 Irish Champion, who is a member of Sliabh Luachra Boxing Club, Castleisland, Co Kerry. O’Brien proved to be a formidable opponent and following a tough contest Cian emerged victorious on a 4-1 split decision.

In the U15 Irish Cadet Final, Cian’s opponent was Patrick Sweeney from Ennis Boxing Club, Co Clare. A two-time Boy 3 Irish Champion, Sweeney had a big reputation however this didn’t deter the young Granard boxer who performed excellently and took the title on another 4-1 split decision.

Cian’s achievement in clinching the U15 Irish Cadet Championship is all the more remarkable considering that he is still eligible for the Boy 2 Category and was a year younger than his semi-final and final opponents.

This is Cian’s third national title and the first year student at Cnoc Mhuire, Granard who has a bright future in boxing is hoping that this latest success could earn him a call up to the Irish Boxing squad and an opportunity to train for and represent his country on the European stage.

Cian and his older brother James are currently training with their club Olympic Mullingar Boxing Club ahead of a tournament in Italy in October.

Cian’s parents, James and Michelle, are immensely proud of his achievements and they would like to thank John Joe Joyce, Head Coach at Olympic Mullingar and the other coaches at the club for their tremendous work in guiding Cian.
