From basketball to designing posters, the school has had plenty of successes to celebrate
St Mel’s College
U16 & U19 Basketball
Our basketball teams faced Marist College, Athlone last Wednesday in their first game of their 2025 Midland League campaign. While our u16s succumbed to a strong Marist squad, they grew in confidence and performance as the game went on and can hope to build on this performance on their next outing. Our Seniors also faced strong opposition and after a good start by both teams, St Mel’s surged into a double-digit lead against the visitors before the end of the first quarter. This proved to be decisive as the teams were evenly matched for the remainder of a very entertaining and exciting fixture. A
A well-balanced team performance saw St Mel’s deservedly securing their first victory of the new season. Well done to both teams and their coaches.

Junior Hurling Training
Our Junior Hurling team had their first training of the year last Wednesday and the energy was unreal. It was great to see the skills, teamwork, and determination already shining through. If any student is interested in joining, new players are always welcome. Sign up in the Assembly Hall using the Google Classroom code provided. Training takes place every Wednesday at lunchtime.
School Mural
The creation of our school mural began last week. This artistic project is being led by Kellyann and Angela Tuite, however, it is very student centred. Our TY students thoroughly enjoyed working hard on it for several days last week. Great progress was made and we can’t wait to see the finished result. Well done to all involved.
Leaving Cert PE
Our 6th year LCPE students worked hard this week, completing their fitness testing as part of their Physical Activity Project (PAP) coursework. These tests allow students to measure, track, and evaluate their performance while implementing classroom knowledge. A great effort all round. Well done to everyone taking part.
Religious Education
Well done to all the students who designed and created posters and infographics in religion classes recently. The posters celebrate Saint Carlo Acutis who was canonised in Rome earlier this month. The students' great work was presented on the wall in our faith space. Well done to all the students involved and their religion teaches.

Music Generation
Well done to all TY students on their progress in their Music Generation module. The students are learning new skills and trying out instruments they may never have played before. Music Generation is a programme which is all about giving young people across Ireland the chance to make and learn music. The boys are really enjoying the module so far this year.
Parents Welcome Evening
Thank you to all the parents/guardians of our 1st year students who attended our welcome evening last Wednesday. It was a great opportunity for our staff to meet with you and chat over a cup of tea. The door is always open here in St Mel’s College if you have any concerns and need to contact us.
