Longford District Court hears defendant ‘lost control of himself’

A man, who admitted committing a public order offence in Longford, has been directed to make a charity contribution.

Mark Healy of Cloonshanville, Frenchpark, county Roscommon pleaded guilty at Longford District Court to the public order offence at Gorteenrevagh, Lanesboro on August 25 last.

Sergeant Mark Mahon, court presenter, said a concerned member of the public contacted Gardaí in relation to an intoxicated man who was stumbling in Lanesboro  on the main road towards Ballymahon.

The Gardaí at the scene found a man wandering near the garda station, he was highly intoxicated and he refused to answer questions.

"He gave a false name to start with and there was certain language used and he became abusive to Gardaí.

The defendant had no previous convictions.

Solicitor Diarmuid Quinn said his client, a professional lorry driver who lives in the UK, accepted his behaviour was 'outrageous' and he had  €400  in court and a letter of apology to the garda.

"He was at a music festival in Belfast and it carried on for a few days and he carried on drinking until the Monday.

"He was topping up and he lost control of himself."

"His memory of the night is not particularly great."

Judge Bernadette Owens considered the case and she directed Mr Healy to pay  €400 to the Little Blue Heroes charity.

She indicated if this was done she would strike out the charges.
