St Mel’s Holy Spirit Day
TYs celebrated Holy Spirit Day on Wednesday, October 15. Students explored who the Holy Spirit is, how we can be filled with God’s presence, and shared moments of prayer, laughter, games, and reflection.

A huge thank you to the incredible volunteers who gave their time, energy, and hearts to make the day so special — from leading sessions and games to serving tea, sharing testimonies, and creating welcoming spaces for everyone.
We’re so grateful for each of you — the Holy Spirit was truly at work among us!

6th Year Careers - TUS Athlone
Our Leaving Certificate students visited the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) Athlone campus for its annual open day on Friday, October 17.

The purpose of the trip was to explore potential courses and gain insight into college life. Students attended talks on a range of programmes including engineering, business, and health sciences.

They also toured the campus facilities, such as the laboratories, sports complex, and student accommodation. Current students and lecturers were available to answer questions and provide first-hand advice.

Many students found this a valuable step in planning their future. The leaving certs also met some past pupils on their visit.

Maths Week
Our 1st year students celebrated 'Maths Week' recently. The Maths Week Quiz took place in the Assembly Hall on Friday, October 17. The 1st year students really enjoyed the quiz. Well done to all students who participated.

The overall winners of the quiz with 39 points out of 48 were Anthony, Mason, Philip, Daniel, and Oscar.

The winners of the best team name were Charlie, Johnaton, Tyler, and Rhys. Their team name was 'The Subtractors'. The students all won a prize of a Tuc Shop voucher. Thank you to all students for their participation in class activities throughout the week.

Thank you to all the Maths teachers involved in the organisation of all of the activities. Finally, thank you to all students who helped out at the 1st year quiz.

Senior Football
Well done to our senior footballers who had a hard fought 2-point win over a physically strong Ardscoil Rís last week. Playing against a gale force wind in the first half, the lads showed great disciplined defending to only trail by 2 points at half time.
An Adam McCarthy goal 3 mins into the second half brought us straight back into contention. Some mature decision-making in the final 10 minutes of the game helped us see out a great win.

We now look forward to a top of the table clash with Marist College Athlone after the midterm break.

From St Mel’s to the World Cup
Congratulations to our past pupil Goodness Ogbanna on his selection in the Ireland squad for the upcoming U17 World Cup in Qatar in November. Ireland will play Panama, Paraguay, and Uzbekistan in the group stages. Just 12 months ago, Goodness was lining out for St Mel’s U17’s in a Leinster Cup game. We wish Goodness and the Ireland squad the best of luck from everyone at St Mel’s.

U15 Soccer
Our U15 soccer team took to the pitch last Monday for their first game of the season. They played a very strong Hartstown team.

The game was a preliminary match for the Leinster Cup Championship. Sean Kelly captained the St. Mel’s side. Although it was a tough battle, our boys succeeded on a 2-1 scoreline and are through to the next stage of the competition.

Well done to all the team and their management. Special mention to the two scorers on the day, Luke Columb and Setanta Smith.
