Longford TidyTowns volunteers, Geraldine Quinn, Michael Keenan, and Ekaterina Izmailova at the Awards Ceremony in Croke Park
There was delight last Friday when Longford town won a prestigious Midlands & East region Waters and Communities Award in the national SuperValu TidyTowns 2025 competition.
Longford town took home a 'Gold Medal' and a highly commended award for the second successive year during the ceremony in Croke Park and the committee were rewarded with a score of 383 marks, an increase of nine on 2024.
The judges said it was a "privilege and joy" to visit the village and "to walk cycle and drive around the hinterland" and they congratulated the TidyTowns teams, co-workers and supporters for presenting the village to a 'wonderful' standard.

The adjudicators also commended the 'hard-working committee' for their gallant efforts and they encouraged them to keep up the 'inspirational' good work.
Chairperson Michael Keenan stated they are delighted with the honour and their larger marks tally. "We were very happy, it's great to get another Gold Medal," he said. "There was an enormous amount of work that went into achieving that."
The judges praised the committee of eight reaching out to over 45 volunteers on WhatsApp for communicating very well with the county council and other official bodies, and they noted the large number of young people involvement with the Tidy Towns Group.

Mr Keenan thanked everybody involved and in particular the volunteers.
"There are a large number of people involved and we also have to pay tribute to all the other parties involved, including Longford County Council. One of the big things they did was they got new equipment to deal with the cleanliness of footpaths and improvements were made to the approach roads."
