Massive funding boost of almost €900,000 for three Longford outdoor recreation projects

A total of €16.5m has been allocated to 63 projects around the country, and include walking trails, mountain access projects, and outdoor water-based amenities

Almost €900,000 has been allocated to projects in Longford, through the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme, which will deliver walking trails and amenities for people, it was announced today.

The announcement was made by Longford Fine Gael TD Micheál Carrigy who said it will make a significant positive difference to people within the county.

“This is more than just infrastructure, it will improve lives in Longford. These projects will give people greater access to nature, recreation and community spaces to support physical and mental wellbeing.”

“Today’s announcement acts upon Fine Gael’s promise to connect communities, promote healthy lifestyles and protect Ireland’s natural heritage.”

The €895,846 in funding announced today is in respect of Measures two and three of the scheme which provides funding of up to €500,000 for strategic repair and maintenance of existing facilities together with the development of new recreational infrastructure.

A total of €16.5m has been allocated to 63 projects around the country, and include walking trails, mountain access projects, and outdoor water-based amenities.

The three Longford projects approved are the Legga to Moyne Walking and Cycling Trail – development of a trail connecting Legga Cross to Moyne (€200,000), the Lissard–Cranalagh More Green Trail, Edgeworthstown – development of a 4.2km walking and cycling trail (€200,000) and the Longford Trails Upgrade 2025 – Raising Standards Countywide – upgrade of 15 existing trails to national standards (€495,846).

Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community Development, Jerry Buttimer said he was delighted the funding was being provided.

"This investment will "further enhance these spaces which not only act as recreational and social spaces for our communities but also add greatly to our tourism sector.

“Today’s announcement will see a wide range of capital projects delivered across the country covering walking and cycling trails, upland paths, and enhancements in water-based activities.

"This is all further delivering on the objectives of our national outdoor recreation strategy Embracing Ireland’s Outdoors.”
