'Collided with pedestrians' Son of Longford man critically injured after horror crash

The collision occurred at the intersection of Bungarribee Road and Lock Street in Blacktown

The son of a county Longford man and two of his friends were critically injured after a car veered onto a footpath where they were standing during a horror crash in Australia.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, the intersection of Bungarribee Road and Lock Street in Blacktown, in Sydney's west shortly after 9am on Friday to treat the trio who were struck by the vehicle.

It is understood the car that veered up on the footpath collided with another car moments before the three men were injured.

Paramedics treated the men at the scene for numerous injuries before the critically injured trio were taken to Westmead Hospital.

One of the young men Emmet Mullooly is the son of county Longford man Padraig Mullooly and his wife Margaret.

Padraig has been in Australia for many years and along with Margaret they have three children Laura, Emmet and Daniel all who are regular visitors to Lehery.

As it happens Padraig only returned to Sydney following a recent holiday in Lehery a few weeks ago.

His son and his two work colleagues were struck after they decided to go for a coffee during a work break.

It is understood they were chatting and waiting for the pedestrian lights to change before crossing the road when the collision occurred.

At that very time two vehicles crashed with one of the vehicles being turned on its side and it careered into the three young men at a high speed.

Local Police Area Command Superintendent Andrew Gorman said the three men aged between 20 and 30, had suffered 'significant injuries'.

"A westbound vehicle had collided with an eastbound vehicle, and the eastern-bound vehicle then collided with a number of pedestrians who were on the southern side of the intersection," he said.

"It will form part of the investigation; speed and the traffic control signals at that intersection."

Local Lehery man Joe O'Brien said that Emmet and his family are in their thoughts.

"It is a terrible traumatic time for the family in Australia but also for local Mullooly family of Margaret, Louis, Brigid and Mike (NY) and their extended family.

"While the injuries to Emmet are bad, thankfully the prognosis is that he will make a good recovery from his injuries.

"To come through such an ordeal is truly frightening and we wish Emmet and his two workmates a full recovery that, in time, will allow them to go forward to lead a long and full life."
