The new store in south Longford is expected to deliver up to 25 full-time jobs
A new Lidl supermarket will be officially opened in Ballymahon next week and it will provide a major boost to the area, according to a councillor in the South Longford area.
Fine Gael Councillor Paul Ross said there is great excitement ahead of the store opening its doors on Thursday, November 20.
Longford County Council planners gave the green light to a planning application by Lidl Ireland Gmbh last December for the development for a Discount Foodstore Supermarket with ancillary off-licence sales in Ballymahon.
The new store is expected to deliver up to 25 full-time jobs.
The planning address for the new store is Main Street / Church View Backlands, Ballymahon and the store is due to span 2,291 square metres in gross floor space, with a net retail sales area of 1,489 sq metres.
The Lidl supermarket will feature a large retail area,a bakery, an off-licence, solar panels, and over 100 parking spaces, including EV, disabled, and parent-child bays.
Cllr Paul Ross, a local representative in the Ballymahon Municipal area, described it as a major boost to the South Longford area.
"It's a huge vote of confidence in Ballymahon as a destination shopping town.
"Ballymahon is a thriving rural town and the addition of Lidl will only add to the shopping experience.
"Historically people in this area would have travelled to Athlone, Mullingar or Longford and this is a huge boost for South Longford.
"There are huge benefits between the jobs, the link-in with the local economy and it will greatly enhance the retail offering in Ballymahon."
The development when it was approved by planners was given approval subject to 20 conditions.
In its planning application, Lidl said that, when operational, the Ballymahon store would "generate in the order of €1.2 million per annum locally" in wages to staff.
