Two old friends, a new choral director and a dedicated musical director have come together
Leading up to Voices of Longford's maiden show "Hey!! Old Friends" in February of 2026 at Backstage Theatre, the group wanted to give an introduction to the team behind bringing this new group to fruition.
"As we move closer to our upcoming rehearsals, we want to take a moment to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Fintan Farrelly for all his incredible work with our Voices of Longford workshops," says Brian Murray, the group's choreographer.

"Fintan’s dedication, passion, and musical expertise continue to inspire everyone involved. His long-standing commitment to St Mel’s Musical Society is second to none — from his many past productions to the well-acclaimed “Me and My Girl” earlier this year, and now as he begins preparations for the Society’s 2026 production of “The Wizard of Oz”, his contribution to Longford’s musical community remains truly exceptional.
"We’re also absolutely delighted to welcome our new Choral Mistress, Emer McGowan, who joins us on this exciting new chapter. Emer, just like Fintan, brings immense talent, enthusiasm, and musical insight — we’re certain she’ll be a fantastic asset to our group as we continue our journey together.
In addition, two familiar faces, two lifelong friends, and two true legends of Longford’s stage — John Kelly and Brian Murray are the heart and humour behind The Voices of Longford.
Between them, they share decades of dedication to the local arts, lighting up stages across the Midlands through their incredible work with St. Mel’s Musical Society and the Longford Variety Group.
John Kelly, a cornerstone of Longford theatre since 1978, has entertained audiences for over forty years with his sharp wit, warmth, and unforgettable performances in shows like “Hello Dolly” and “Oklahoma!” — earning him multiple AIMS nominations and the affectionate title of “King of Comedy.”
Brian Murray, a gifted choreographer, dancer, and producer, has brought creativity and flair to countless productions — from “Me and My Girl” to “The King and I” and “Fiddler on the Roof”. His work behind the scenes and on stage has inspired generations of performers across the region.
Both men look back on their many years performing with the Longford Variety Group with great fondness — remembering laughter, friendship, and unforgettable memories made along the way.
John and Brian celebrate the spirit, stories, and sounds of their hometown — keeping the joy of performance alive for all to enjoy through Voices of Longford.
