Longford District Court Judge Bernadette Owens warns defendant that her patience was running thin

A woman who stole €274 worth of sportswear and cosmetics from two shops in Longford Town has been given extra time to come up with the compensation for the affected businesses.

At a recent sitting of Longford District Court, 41 year old Mary Nevin of 3 Camlin Mews, Longford, was remanded on continuing bail until February 17, 2026, with Judge Bernadette Owens warning that her patience was running thin.

The court heard how on Christmas Eve 2024, Ms Nevin stole sportswear to the value of €170 from Elvery’s on the Athlone Road in Longford. She was arrested for the offence by Garda Eoin Mulhaire.

On February 21 2025, Ms Nevin went on to steal €103.96 worth of cosmetics from Boots on Ballymahon Street in Longford Town. She was arrested and charged by Garda Declan O’Grady.

Representing Ms Nevin solicitor Frank Gearty requested more time for his client to find the money to pay as compensation to the injured parties.

Mr Gearty explained to the court that his client had fallen on hard times, adding, “She has been homeless since her house was attacked. She has been living out in Kenagh with her parents. She must come up with the sum but she has pleaded with me in recent days for more time. There was never any question that she wouldn’t pay.”

Addressing Sergeant Enda Daly, who is acting on behalf of the state, Judge Owens asked if he had any further issues.

He replied he did not and suggested a February court sitting for Ms Nevin.

Judge Bernadette Owens said she would remand Ms Nevin on continuing bail until February 17, adding, “I expect progress then. I might not be as patient that day.”
